Traditional Thursday #168

Unless there is a major crisis, today is my last day in the office until sometime next year. I really don’t mind work. But, I love being on vacation; especially a long one. It’s not often that I can say “here’s to the weekend” on a Thursday. Enjoy today’s post. We’ll be around and posting more intermittently than normal over the break. We don’t have much to do except relax and unwind. And that’s the way we like it.

Wednesday Weirdness #168

We’re going to go see the latest “Star Wars” movie sometime over Christmas vacation; but not right away since we prefer to wait for the crowds to diminish a bit. Unfortunately, that increases the likely hood that we well encounter some idiot that thinks it’s fun to ruin the ending for people that haven’t yet seen the movie. I know one guy at work that really goes out of his way to be a spoiler. Thankfully, I’m going to be on vacation. But it does make me wonder what sort of person enjoys being thought of as a jerk.

Tuesday Two For #168

I’ve been so busy Christmas shopping that I haven’t had much time to do anything else online. I like to go to the store and get gifts in person too. But, I’ve discovered it’s much less stressful if I already have a few things for everyone. It’s easier for me find gifts I like when I don’t absolutely “need” to get something. And, not having to keep shopping until everyone is taken care of makes for a lot more relaxing vacation. In case you were wondering, I’m never too busy for a photo or movie making session (even if I don’t post the results right away).

Monday Monologue #168

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • I found the problem with the mail server. I was scanning all incoming mail including spam for viruses. Now I only check “good” mail for viruses. That definitely gave it some speed! We get a LOT of email that is so spammy it’s auto-deleted by the spam filter and never even makes it into the “junk” folder.
  • It’s been a month since I had it repaired, so I was finally able to wash my car. I’m not obsessive; but 30-days is a long time when you drive in areas where they treat the roads with salt and grit in the winter. It’s probably the biggest nuisance of the whole situation.
  • The latest version of WordPress broke the plugin that I use to overlay images on the screen so I had to write a custom plugin to make the current version generate the same HTML as the previous version. I wonder what happened to thorough testing and to backward compatibility.
  • Christmas is less than two weeks away and I’ve only just started my Christmas shopping. Strangely, I’ve got something for the “temporary” dog who doesn’t even live here anymore; but I’m struggling with what to get for my father. What do you get for someone who doesn’t have very many any interests?

Friday Featurette #167

The Husband and The Wife relaxing after their "photo" sessionI’ve saw some old friends at a Christmas party which was good. It is amazing how time flies. Some people were about the same. But others had undergone some significant changes since we last got together. Only a few have “young” kids. Most are super-busy with school age children. And there are a few like us who have children that are (mostly) grown. I like where The Wife and I are in our lives (except for the dog). The days that we thought would last forever are gone. But; things that we thought would never be possible are now a reality. It’s been a very eventful year.

Wednesday Weirdness #167

After over a year with the “temporary” dog running around, the house seems a bit weird without her. Of course I don’t miss her waking us all up in the middle of the night because she saw something outside that needed to be barked at. And I never could teach her to pick up her toys.

Monday Monologue #167

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • Rather than go back to the dealer and have it done, I installed the front license plate bracket on our new vehicle. It was really weird drilling holes in the bumper of our brand new car. I’m sure I was more careful than whoever would have done it at the dealership. I measured, marked and verified their locations many times before actually drilling.
  • The “temporary” dog has returned to her new home. It’s too early to tell if her departure is permanent.
  • I’ve added a couple of extra weekday workouts since we won’t row anymore until next spring. It makes for some long days; but I still (mostly) get to eat what I want.
  • Our mail server is running slowly for some unknown reason which makes the spam filter timeout which, of course, results in us receiving lots of spam. I need to find and fix the problem sooner rather than later.

Friday Featurette #166

The Wife standing naked in front of the mirror drying her hairThis must be our week for network outages. On house lost connectivity on Monday, the biggest online shopping day of the year. And then this site was offline for neatly eight hours today. Both incidents were very annoying. Especially this blog since everything’s is supposed to be redundant. Anyway, have a good weekend. We’ll see you on Monday.
