Wednesday Weirdness #256

The hard drive on my computer at work went bad recently and needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, a few programs got corrupted before I noticed including Internet Explorer which is the hardest program ever to repair since it can’t easily be uninstalled and reinstalled. I was finally able to fix it this week; but, it took hours and hours because of all the Windows updates and reboots needed to get it back to the most recent version.

Wednesday Weirdness #253

There is a new version of WordPress available which apparently fixes some of the things that the last update broke. IT would be better to NOT break things. But, when you use “free” software, you get what you get. And, in some cases what you get is a gigantic nuisance.

Monday Monologue #252

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • After my problems last week, I bought some jumper cables to put in my new vehicle even though its less than a year old. Hopefully I won’t need them; but it will save time if I ever do. Definitely quicker than calling roadside assistance. Of course, with two new vehicles, I thought that I was done with doing stuff like that.
  • We got absolutely soaked during our row on Friday. Heavy rain (but, thankfully, no lightning) suddenly popped not once but twice. Then the sun came back out. Of course, we were quite wet by then. Fortunately, it initially was a warm July day so we didn’t get too cold.
  • I finally got a small battery backup for our desktop computer. It won’t help for the longer power outages that we always seem to have. But, we’ve had a bunch of short ones where the power was off just long enough to restart the computer. Now we won’t lose our work when that happens.
  • We did another evening row today. Except for putting things away in the dark, we both kinda like rowing whine the sun is going down. Especially when its sunny and warm. A lot better than the days when we want/need the afternoon sun to make it warm enough to row.

Monday Monologue #251

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • My almost new car wouldn’t start on Saturday morning! Not the best way to start the weekend. Especially since it will be a couple of days before I can schedule an appointment.
  • I edged and trimmed everything even the occasional areas with my old electric trimmer since my gas one is still broken. Ad of course I cut the grass. So, our yard looks really nice; especially with all the rain.
  • The wife and I got in the pool both days this weekend. It was glorious. Actually, not super-hot; but the “feels like” temperature was in the 90s.
  • The data center that our mail server is in had a total network outage on today. We were disconnected for several hours today. And its only Monday.

Wednesday Weirdness #249

I have to work tonight even though I’m in the middle of a long-scheduled vacation. Stuff happens sometimes. But; I’m not happy because I think it could have been easily avoided with better planning.

Monday Monologue #249

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • All of the rain that we had in Friday made the water high and the river full of debris. So, we didn’t row over the weekend; but we definitely got in the pool. So far, a great start to our vacation.
  • I did few errands this morning. It was weird since some places were open and some places were closed. Most parking lots were only half full and I was able to get in and out of everywhere very quickly. If only every day could be like this.
  • My gas trimmer has been at the repair shop for a long, long time. I would have purchased a new one except its still under warranty. I’ve been using my old corded electric one for much of the summer which is a nuisance.
  • I ate way too much at the cookout we had today. It was good. I just need to make sure it’s a very occasional thing. I could never exercise enough if I at that much all the time.
  • Everyone have a happy and safe Independence Day.

Wednesday Weirdness #246

Even though its only been three weeks since the last update, I just installed yet another version of WordPress, the blog software we use. The frequent updates are becoming a pain; especially with their tendency to break plugins. I can’t see how all these releases can possibly be thoroughly tested; and judging from all the bugs found after their release, it doesn’t appear that they are.

Monday Monologue #246

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • The weekend was glorious. We rowed every day and got in the pool as well. I did have to cut the grass along the back line; but skipped the rest of the yard. It was a cool spring. So, we are really enjoying the hot weather.
  • The new automatic chlorine feeder certainly makes checking and adjusting the pool chemistry an easy task. Every time I replace it I think that Its not that expensive relative to operating a pool I need to get a new one more often before it becomes such a nuisance.
  • Our printer is running out of whatever ink cartridge is represented by a circle as opposed to a bowtie. I wonder why they couldn’t just use words rather than cryptic symbols since it has an LCD display. I think it’s low on color ink.
  • The Wife and I did our second twilight row today. We love the long days of late spring and early summer. We just wish they lasted longer. We’re already almost to the longest day of the year.

Monday Monologue #245

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • The Wife and I were outside for most of the weekend. It was hot and sunny the entire time. We would have preferred a bit cooler; but it was definitely much better than cold and rainy. And, we were on the water which is always good.
  • I couldn’t get the lid back on our chlorine feeder on Sunday which was a problem since we can’t run the pump with the chlorine feeder open. It was stuck so firmly that pieces of rubber came off the hammer I was using to “persuade” it. After a while, I did get it tight enough to run the pump. But now I need a new hammer and, of course, a new automatic chlorine feeder.
  • The Wife and I did our first twilight row of the year today. It was good. We used to never row when it was getting dark; but now we kinda like it. It rained earlier in the evening but was clear and dry for our row.
  • I am triple-booked at work for lunchtime meetings on Wednesday. The only think that I hate worse than lunchtime meetings are multiple lunchtime meetings where people are complaining that I can’t make their meeting at a time where I shouldn’t even be in the office; let alone in another meeting.

Wednesday Weirdness #244

The old-fashioned wall mount telephone in the basement was somehow off the hook today even though no one had touched it. We almost never use it so it wasn’t the first place I looked when the phone line wouldn’t work. In fact, I had already checked outside and determined that the problem was inside the house when The Wife reminded me that we had a second phone line in the basement in addition to the one in I was thinking of. We still “need” a land line; but, sometimes, it can be a lot of trouble.
