Friday Featurette #59

The Wife sitting naked on the bed with some flavored lubricant waiting for The HusbandI very nearly got hit by a car yesterday. I work downtown and walk to most places I go, so I expect close calls; but, this incident was exceptionally close. Whenever I’m crossing the street, I try to be careful and look in all directions. The vehicle that almost struck me was turning left when it shouldn’t have trying to beat oncoming traffic. Plus it was left of center. It’s very hard to predict when someone is going to do something that stupid. They could have very easily collided with cross traffic approaching the intersection as well. So, today was a “good” day because yesterday could have easily been a very, very bad day.

Wednesday Weirdness #59

It doesn’t happened very often; but occasionally, we find a program that we want to record is on local television; but not on cable and, consequently, not available on the cable company’s DVR. We don’t ever want to go back to the days of VCRs; however, it was nice to be able to record anything that you could receive. The Wife and I don’t live in the past and talk about the “good old days”; but, we have noticed how new technology is a double-edged sword. And, today, we got a very small nick.

Monday Monologue #59

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • The Wife and I are no longer soccer parents. Our daughter played her last organized soccer game this weekend. It was sad. She’ll probably play again at some time in the future; but for the first time ever, she has no idea if/when she’ll play again.
  • Other than being an unexpected expense, the new laptop is cool. And, unlike most people, I kinda like Windows 8.1.
  • It’s taken a few weeks; but, The Wife and are finally getting back used to running on weekends. Not so much from a cardio standpoint. But it emphasizes the fact that we can’t do our preferred outdoor evening/weekend activities (rowing and swimming) until next spring.
  • It look like we are going to have a long cold winter. The weather is miserable outside. Freezing rain turning into snow. So whoever is stuck out driving in it will not be able to see the ice. My commute to work tomorrow morning will be “interesting”.

Friday Featurette #58

The Husband and The Wife enjoying a moment togetherEvery year in November, usually around Thanksgiving, I renew the license for Kaspersky Anti-Virus that we use on all of our desktop computers and update the latest version. Since license keys are version independent, I decided to update to the 2014 version early. Strangely, the update wasn’t as painful as usual. But, several times a day, the new version would use ALL of the CPU for a long time. The recommended “fix” was to uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reboot, update signatures and reboot. Performing that procedure took all evening but did resolve the problem. I wonder why they publish an upgrade that installs over the current version if it doesn’t really work. I’ve got a LOT better things to do with my time (like the activities in the picture), especially on a Friday evening.

Wednesday Weirdness #58

I had one of those “don’t spend more than 30 minutes on it; but …” tasks at work. I HATE it when people tell me to waste my time. If it could be done in 30 minutes I would have already done it! Then I spent an hour that I didn’t really have explaining why I wasn’t able to do what they wanted in such a short amount of time. I don’t mind if people want/need for me to work on something else when I’m already super busy. But it’s very irritating when they tell me not to spend too much time on something and then get mad and don’t like the result.

Monday Monologue #58

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • I spent most of yesterday “fixing” a broken laptop. Unfortunately, after hours isolating the problem, the permanent fix turned out to be a new system. Lately, that’s been our (lack of) luck.
  • I know we’ve posted complained about it before; but, we both have difficulty adjusting to the time change. It might have been a good idea long ago; but, nowadays, it’s just a gigantic nuisance.
  • My smartphone has been beeping and vibrating a LOT more than usual. Apparently, Facebook alerts for updates by friend’s aren’t “broken” anymore. I was getting so many FB activity notifications that I finally had to turn them off.
  • Remember to vote tomorrow. It’s not a presidential or congressional election year; so, thankfully, the advertisements have not been nearly as noticeable/obnoxious as they were a year ago.
