Monday Monologue #369

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • I’ve caught a bad head cold. Not unusual for this time of year; but relatively rare for me. I’ve been fortunate to seldom get sick for most of my life. Of course, that makes me extra miserable when I am.
  • We got outside and rowed on Saturday. After almost two months of being stuck inside, it was good to be back on the water.
  • It still seems a bit weird working while The Wife is off. It’s OK since there’s not a lot to do since it’s rainy and dreary outside. But, it is strange.
  • I got a new fitness tracker with much-improved battery life for Christmas. Unlike my old one, it’s still going strong after five days. Great to eliminate a nuisance that I didn’t even know I had.

Wednesday Weirdness #368

We saw the new Star Wars movie today. The concession stand was extremely disorganized. Clerks would randomly walk away from their station so you didn’t know what line to get in. I didn’t even complain on the online survey. I’m sure having to serve people non-stop on Christmas is no fun.

Monday Monologue #368

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).
  • For the first time in many, many years, I am working this week and not vacation. It’s was weird getting up this morning; especially since The Wife is on vacation.
  • We have our tickets to see the new Star Wars movie later his week. Hopefully we won’t see or hear any spoilers before we get to watch it.
  • Now that we have our own fitness equipment in the basement, The Wife and I are doing most of our workouts at home. It’s nice to be able to set our own schedule, particularly on Sundays when our gyms have limited hours.
  • I seem to be catching a cold. I’m just hoping it’s not the flu. Obviously, I don’t really have a choice; but I hate being sick.

Monday Monologue #367

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • We had a significant accumulation of snow overnight so I was pleasantly surprised that the driveway was mostly clear when I opened the garage this morning as I was preparing the snow blower. For whatever strange reason the concrete pavement was warm enough that more snow melted than stuck. Unfortunately, it’s supposed to snow all night and I doubly I’ll be that lucky tomorrow.
  • This year, I made sure to inflate the tires on the power base so I would have enough traction to get through the first snow fall. Last year I forgot and was struggled through most of the driveway before I figured out why it was so hard to turn around. So, I’ll be ready for tomorrow.
  • We haven’t had a day that the weather was remotely good enough for rowing since we returned from our final rowing trip of the season. The weather around here has been “typical” for December. We’re hoping for a good day or two this winter; but we may not have one until next spring.
  • Christmas is next week. I’ve had a lot of distractions this December so its really rushed up on me. I’ve done some shopping; but still have a bit to do. Hopefully I can get finished on Tuesday which will allow a week for shipping.

Monday Monologue #365

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).
  • I replaced the wall console for our garage door opener. I like to support the local parts store so that it will still be open in case I need something in a hurry; but it was a lot pricier than the same item online. I may have had second thoughts if it wasn’t a relatively inexpensive item.
  • I actually got a large physical item in a post-Thanksgiving Day sale. That’s a rarity for me. Usually I only get small items or software. I’m glad I did; because, unlike some “sales” the price went back up. Its not her yet; but should be very useful when it arrives.
  • Over the weekend when I was using a full-featured photo editor to add depth-of field to a photograph I took over Thanksgiving, I was thinking how pointless the “rich photo editing” capability of many online packages is. Having basic zoom, crop and resize functions is useful. But they are far too primitive for anything but simple edits.
  • I cleaned the oven over the long-weekend. It wasn’t warm; but the house was still tolerable with a few windows open. We like to clean it around this time so that its not supper dirty in the depths of winter when it’s far too cold outside open any windows.

Monday Monologue #340

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • We are back and had a good time away in the sun. We keep hoping for sunny days around here; but the unseasonal rain goes on and on and on.
  • A recent update made some unexpected changes to Office. All of the icons are different and some things are moved around. It’s almost like a totally new version which is a bit disconcerting since you generally expect updates to not be as obtrusive.
  • I don’t know how long or how well I will be able to do it; but I trying not to complain. When things are good, they are really good. And when things are “bad” there are people wo would love to trade places with us.
  • We still have a lot of room for improvement; but our rowing is a lot better than when we first started or even compared to a few years ago. We are not “fast”; but we’re not slow anymore either.

Monday Monologue #321

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • The NFL regular reason is over. It was a forgettable season for our favorite professional football team.
  • We had a fleeting hope that we might be able to row today. Unfortunately, it rained a lot and the river will be unrowable due to high water for until at least the next weekend.
  • We will ring in the New Year quietly at home tonight. We do watch the ball drop since we’re usually awake then anyway; especially when we are on vacation.
  • Have a safe and Happy New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Monday Monologue #320

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • In the spirit of Christmas, I changed the ringtone on my phone to a Christmas song. I won’t keep it beyond the festive period; but, it’s a good way to help get into the holiday spirit.
The Wife and I are hosting Christmas this year. Or family doesn’t rotate holiday get-togethers so this will be new for everyone, especially us.
  • The gym was open until noon today so I got in a Christmas-eve workout. It was an “easy” day for me so I people-watched while I did my thing. Some people spend more time finding the perfect workout music than actually using the machine.
  • The Wife and I are really enjoying our time away. We always take vacation the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day (plus a few more days if things work out).

Monday Monologue #319

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • The battery died in my SUV last week. I noticed that it was starting slowly and had it replaced before we got stranded somewhere. But, I still didn’t like buying a new battery or paying for a charging system diagnosis.
  • For the second time in three weekends the weather warm enough to row; but, the river was unrowable due to high water. We don’t take chances in cold water. (Even when spring seems very far away.)
  • We’re almost ready for Christmas which is a good thing since Christmas is next week. I still have a few gifts to wrap and, if the weather cooperates, set up some additional decorations outside.
  • I’m not quite fully recovered; but I’m mostly over the lingering cold I’ve had. I hope it’s the last one of the winter. I’ve certainly been sick for a long time.

Monday Monologue #316

An interior monologue from me (and sometimes the wife).

  • It was hard to get back to work today after being off for four days. I really didn’t feel like going out this morning. Especially since the weather is cold and blustery. The sunshine we had over the weekend totally vanished.
  • Thanksgiving was great. We did all of the traditional things that we like to do. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is a week earlier than usual. So, we have more than a month until our Christmas vacation.
  • Amazingly, we rowed over the weekend. Of course, it’s supposed to snow tomorrow. It was a lot more fun than cutting the grass or raking the leaves. Especially since we’ve never been able to row this late in the year. Of course, it’s supposed to snow tomorrow.
  • I did not buy anything today. There were a lot of good deals. Just not on the items we want/need. These days, I do almost all of my Christmas shopping online. I just don’t need to be finished before the end of November.
